Dr Jean Chai is a Senior Consultant Ophthalmologist who provides comprehensive eye care, and whose areas of clinical expertise include:
- Cataract and General ophthalmology – femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery, and use of premium lenses (toric, multifocal lenses)
- Corneal and External eye diseases – dry eyes, blepharitis, meibomian gland dysfunction, allergic eye diseases, conjunctivitis, infectious keratitis, pterygium etc.
- Corneal surgery including pterygium surgery
- Corneal transplantation
- Femtosecond LASIK and other refractive surgical options (PRK, SMILE, implantable collamer lens).
She graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, National University of Singapore (NUS) in 2004, where she was placed on the Dean’s List for academic excellence. She obtained her Master of Medicine (Ophthalmology) and was elected as a Fellow of the College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (Ophthalmology) and as a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine of Singapore, Chapter of Ophthalmologists, in 2011.
She received her Ophthalmology specialist training at the Singapore National Eye Centre and trained in the subspecialty of Corneal and Refractive surgery. She furthered her training under the Healthcare Manpower Development Programme (HMDP) in 2011 for her fellowship in New York, USA under the tutelage of Dr Eric Donnenfeld, and Dr Henry Perry in Corneal and Refractive surgery.
She has authored several publications in international journals, book chapters and has lectured in regional and international conferences. She also received several awards including Best House Officer, Service with a heart award and Medical Class of 1975 book prize.
She is passionate about teaching and believes in moulding the next generation. Prior to private practice, she was an Assistant Professor with Duke-NUS Medical School, Clinical Senior Lecturer with Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, NUS and the Program Director of the SingHealth Ophthalmology Residency Program.
